One hundred years earlier (approximately our time, since this book is set 100 years in the future), El Patron had approached the US and Mexican governments and explained to them that they had two problems. The original DNA holder is a man named El Patron and he’s the dictator of a land called Opium. ![]() The House of the Scorpion doesn’t feel like what I think of as science fiction, but it definitely deserved every award that’s plastered on the cover. The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is incredibly good – tight story, excellent plot development, and really great characters. The story follows a clone, Matt is the only clone who hasn’t had his brain destroyed and he must figure out if he’s destined for greatness or to be simply an organ bank for his maker. ![]()

![]() ![]() Gareth is a recipient of the Boston Public Library’s “Literary Lights for Children” award. Gareth Hinds is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels based on literary classics, including Beowulf (which Publisher’s Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four starred reviews and a spot on ten “best of 2010” lists), Romeo and Juliet (which Kirkus called “spellbinding”), and Macbeth (which the New York Times called “stellar” and “a remarkably faithful rendering”). ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s also a deep-dive (forgive the pun) into the Irish and Italian under-world of the time. This is a historical novel about the Depression and WWII, particularly the naval work in New York that supported the war effort. But an encounter with Dexter Styles reminds her how much she never knew about her father. Anna thought she gave up on her father long ago, even before he abandoned the family. She’s fascinated by the sea and wants to become a diver, but there are no women divers at the time. Years later, her father has disappeared and Anna is doing war work at a Navy Yard factory and living with her mother and her severely disabled sister. ![]() The book begins when she’s eleven and accompanies her father to the posh Brooklyn home of Dexter Styles for an important business meeting. Manhattan Beach tells the story of Anna, who grows up during the time of World War II. If you loved Goon Squad, this book isn’t anything like that one, but don’t let that keep you from reading it. If you’re a Jennifer Egan fan, you’ve already heard that this book is a bit different from her others, in that it’s traditional historical fiction. ![]() ![]() I was a little frustrated at Trella’s continued reluctance and even outright stubbornness to learn anything about her parents. The entire system is run by a family of security specialists, the Travas. The scrubs are those who clean the pipes to keep them running efficiently and there is a very distinct caste system wherein those who are the scrubs who clean the ducts and handle all the laundry are kept separated from the uppers who control the computers and the population. The Inside is set up as a cube and is completely self-sustained. The story revolves around a scrub, Trella, who moves easily through the pipes and air vents of a very controlled area known as Inside. ![]() Also, I categorize the books I read based on what I think, not based on where you can find them in the store. I give away the end twists, so if you haven’t read the story, you might not want to read behind the cut.
